This weekend we went to Great Wolf Lodge. This is an indoor water park in Williamsburg, Virginia. I threw all of the items two kids under five would need in a bag sans my swimsuit and headed out for our road trip. We got to the park I got everyone in their suits applied sunscreen, filled their bellies, and found all the necessities goggles, towels, shoes. Then I went to put on my bathing suit. OH! MY! Where has my bottom gone? Why is this suit full of snags? When did those crinkles in the cups occur? Moral of the story try on your swimsuit!!! I had not worn this suit in quite awhile since I was pregnant last summer. It was probably years ago that I placed this black one piece on. I figured I better wear a one piece so the baby doesn’t have me arrested for exposure when she grabs at my suit.

STEP 2: Face the torture… That is right finding a swimsuit is torture of the worst kind. First, leave the kids at home. Second, grab an HONEST friend. You do not want o bring the friend that says that looks great when it doesn’t. Third, drive to a place with a lot of stores. Fourth, try on several shapes and sizes of suits. Fifth, pick a suit that flatters what you have and covers what you wish would disappear.

Tip:
Avoid prints on the bottom you are not a billboard
Buy a suit that comes in separates and pick the size that actually fits your top and the one that fits your bottom.
While in the dressing room try to move around squat down stand up over and over again
Does the suit stay in place? Really, ladies we are no longer the ladies that lounge at the pool in suits that are for show. Look for fit, comfort, and contour.

How to have FREE Love

~Email / text or phone call at work. (keep it clean - don't want to make the computer/ IT guys blush) Just something quick and just a matter of checking in with him. This has helped my hubby and me to stay connected and really gives me a heads up to how his day is going - and possibly if he needs a little extra TLC after a rough day. The reverse is also true. In this age of hyper-communication this is a great way to stay connected. It's quick and easy and really little effort. I timed my most recent phone call and it was two minutes! Just a quick hello, how was your day, just wanted to check in and let you know I love you. When I suggested this to one friend she kind of laughed and said that if she did that to her husband, that the first thing he would ask is, "What's wrong?" I then shared the fact that I had started this "ritual" about 4 years ago and realized once, after a particularly busy day herding my little men around, that my usual lunch-time phone call was forgotten. Of course, I didn't realize this until mid-afternoon when my husband called me! He'd gotten so in the habit of that call, that he missed hearing from me and called to make sure all was OK. Don't get me wrong, there are still some days when we both are busy that calls are missed, but as a whole, it gives us a minute to touch base - and for me, to tell him some things that I may want to discuss further that evening. Goodness knows at the five o'clock "witching hours" my memory for talking points is shot not to be remembered until the kiddos are in bed...then again, that is if I remember before falling into my normal comatose state at that point!

~ Do you remember when folks used to send snail mail?? (gasp! I know!) How about the Caillou episode where all Caillou's mom got in the mail was "Bills, bills, bills"? Caillou wants to send his mommy a card to make her feel better and guess what?? It did! You know you love it. Going to the mailbox and getting a card or note in the mail is like hitting the jackpot for a bright spot in your day. Well, if that is how you feel, then what about sending your spouse a just because card? I do know some folks who put notes in their spouse's luggage when they travel, but if they don't travel much, what about putting something in the mail to be received at home, or work, or on his pillow? Send your girlfriend a quick note saying that you are glad to know she's there when you need her and if you haven't said it lately, thanks! (yes, you may talk to that friend at least once a day anyway, but why not spread the sunshine....especially on a rainy day.) It doesn't have to be much, just a little something. Trust me, a little goes a long way with your girlfriends, but also with your honey. Or your kids?? Don't you remember when mom used to stick a note in your lunch box? I heard it said recently, that notes happen a lot during the early years of school (kindergarten and first grade) when it is especially hard for little ones to read by themselves, so the teachers have to help, but what about sticking a piece of candy on an index card and a quick note to your tween or teen? (Attach some sweet tarts and say something corny like "I love you, sweet-tart" - I bet you a nickle you get at least a smile if not a slight eye roll - but they will remember it.)

~ Last, but not least, having trouble getting things together for a date night? Fun budget went out with your kids new shoes budget? (be sure to check out Amee's tips for clothes shopping - but if that is still not enough) why not have date night IN? Be creative. It doesn't take much money all it takes is a little planning and thought. The days are getting longer and the weather a tad warmer. Why not send your hubby an invitation (yes, another index card) to meet you on the back deck, share some adult beverages, some left over pizza or a special dinner that you have set aside after giving the kiddos their favorite "kid fare". Conversation that is uninterrupted? Priceless!

I actually spent $6.03 but the paper towels were $4.99 of the cost and then tax. I saved $115.11 today. So.. why have you not signed up for our workshop did you make $115.11 in under 30 minutes??

Where are the Coupons?

Today I would like to spend some time telling you where you can get coupons. After all, coupons are like money! Did you know that coupons are not just available in the Sunday Paper? They are found in a multitude of places.

In Stores: When you are walking down the store isles, keep an eye out for coupons. Many stores have little machines that produce coupons called "blinkies". I do NOT recommend emptying the machine. However, taking a couple for future use is acceptable. Stores also have tear pads of coupons. In drug stores, look near the pharmacy or at the checkout counter. Also look in the refrigerated drink section.

From Samples: I love registering for samples! The best part about samples is that more often than not, the sample will come with a high dollar amount coupon.

So, remember coupons are money!

From Packages: Do you look inside a package before you throw it away? You should! Some companies put coupons on the inside of a box, on the instruction pamphlet or loose within the product. I recently found a coupon on the back of a yogurt lid (yeah kind of gross, but it washed up nicely!). How about on the outside of the box? Have you ever noticed some products have "peelies" coupons you can peel off and use instantly at the checkout?

Online: You can print coupons online. These are called Internet printable coupons. Although there is some controversy over these coupons, most stores do take them now. NEVER copy a coupon. This is fraud and one of the biggest reasons stores are leery of the Internet printable coupons. You can print coupons from our sidebar at coupons.com, at smartsource.com, at redplum.com, or coolsavings.com to name a few. Tip: to print a coupon twice, hit the browsers back button once the coupon is sent to your printer. Refresh the page and hit print again.

Sign up for Newsletters: Many companies offer e-mail newsletters. I sign up for these since they will often offer promotions and occasional coupons.

In Magazines: There are many magazines that have coupons in them. I am addicted to coupons, so the first thing I do when I get a new magazine is flip through quickly to look for coupons! While waiting at Jiffy Lube recently, I started flipping through their old magazines in the waiting area. There were a ton of coupons no one ever bothered with! Yes, I know I have a coupon addiction problem!

Some Papers are Better Than Others When it comes to COUPON INSERTS

I just got my Sunday Papers and I wanted to update you all on the coupon inserts. If you only get the Daily Progress, I am afraid you will be greatly disappointed as the inserts do not have many great coupons. However, the Richmond Times Dispatch has some great coupons and many more coupons than the Daily Progress. I would recommend picking up a Richmond Times Dispatch if you are out today.

Not a local? If you have more than one paper in your area, the coupon inserts can vary from paper to paper. You will just have to purchase a couple and determine which paper produces the best inserts! Trial and error!

Happy Mother's Day!

So it’s true, we all want to be someone else sometimes….
I want to be Rachel Ray. You know, happy and effective in the Kitchen. The closest I come is, I married an Italian. I thought it would be fun to cook her recipes using the sales flyer as my guide to budget friendly meal with flair, flavor, and frugality.

New York Deli-Style Mac & Cheese Budget Friendly Version

1 pound elbow macaroni - Pasta around a $1.00 a box
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons butter, plus additional for buttering toast
3 tablespoons flour
2 cups milk
1/4 cup spicy deli mustard
2 cups NY aged sharp cheddar, grated 8 ounces of Food Lion cheese just $1.79 a bag
1/3 pound deli pastrami, roughly chopped - Lunch meat Food Lion brand $1.79 a package
3 slices rye toast, crumbled or coarsely chopped in a food processor - Rye Bread about $2.99 a loaf

Preparation

Pre-heat broiler to high or oven to 400°F.Place a large pot of water over high heat and bring it up to a boil to cook the pasta. Once at a boil, add some salt and the pasta, and cook just shy of al dente. Heads up – pull out a mug of starchy cooking water before draining the pasta.While the pasta is cooking, heat a medium-size skillet over medium heat and add the butter. When the butter melts, add flour and cook about a minute. Whisk in milk reserved starchy water and spicy mustard, and bring up to a bubble. Stir in the cheese in a figure-eight motion, reserving enough to sprinkle on the top of the casserole, until it's all melted. Fold in the pastrami and season with salt and pepper to taste. When the pasta is done, drain it well and combine with sauce. Pour into baking dish and top with reserved cheese and crumbled rye toast. Place in oven until cheese is brown and bubbling.

Bacon-Wrapped Salmon with Asparagus

Serves 4
Four 6-ounce salmon fillets $2.99 each portion
4 slices black-pepper bacon Kroger sliced bacon $1.70 a package
One 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated .69¢
2 cloves garlic, peeled and grated $1.00
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 pinches crushed red pepper
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 tablespoons tamari (dark soy sauce)

Asparagus $1.99 LB (also on sale at Harris Teeter this week for.99¢/lb!)

Preparation

Season the salmon with salt and pepper, then wrap each fillet with the bacon. Arrange the fish on a broiler pan and roast until the bacon is almost crisp and the fish is almost firm, about 12 minutes.
On a rimmed baking sheet, toss together the Asparagus, ginger, garlic, EVOO and crushed red pepper; season with salt. Roast in the lower third of the oven until tender, about 12 minutes.
In a small saucepan, bring the maple syrup and tamari to a boil. Baste the salmon liberally with the glaze and cook for 1 minute more.

I looked for recipes that are easy to follow and use ingredients that are readily available in the average home. I hope you try something new this week!

Tips: Most Kroger stores double coupons up to and including .50¢. There are other items on sale this week that are over 50% off with coupons, however they are cheaper at other stores. Check your circular for your store policies; some areas may differ. The SS stands for Smart Source insert and the RP stands for Red Plum insert int eh Sunday Paper. The date is the date it was in the paper!

Advanced Couponers: Ready for more savings? You can load coupons onto your Kroger Plus card through Cellfire, Shortcuts and Proctor & Gamble. You have to register your Kroger Plus Card and then select the coupons to load. I would suggest loading them a day before your trip. The best part is that you can use a paper manufactures coupon along with these electronic coupons! All you have to do is swipe your Kroger Plus Card and then hand over your paper coupons at the end. The electronic coupons will automatically be deducted. Note: the Cellfire coupons can be loaded onto your card instead of your cell phone!

If you are new to couponing, I would recommend waiting a bit to do all of this until you are comfortable with the coupon world! Don’t worry, it will all make sense soon enough!

First, there are a few things you must know about me. I am not a girly-girl, but I like pretty, girly things like flowers and nice smelling perfume. Now, I also live in a house filled with men (perhaps that's why I like the nice smelling perfume??!) All kidding aside, I like flowers and yet, in the community where I live water is slightly expensive. In addition I am trying to do my part to help save the environment.

Here are a few tips that might help you. I would first suggest that you shower with a bucket in your shower. No, seriously. This was a tip I learned when we first moved into our current house and we were under some water rationing conditions. How many of you turn on your shower in the morning and let it run a minute or two until it reaches *just* the right temperature? You are paying for that water and letting it run down the drain. If you have a bucket in your shower you can collect that water and then save it to water the flowers and other plants later on. I usually had an empty gallon milk jug on hand that I would store the "flower/plant" water in. Then I could just leave the bucket in my shower. Important: Please label your jug "flower/plant water" do an unsuspecting person doesn't drink it!

Another place to get "free" water is from your air conditioner/ heat pump. **Now I will add this disclaimer - just check with Miss Utility and whomever you have servicing your air conditioning (heat pump) unit first to make sure there aren't any other power or cable lines or something that you may run into that would be harmful. That said, if you look near your heat pump, you will surely see some pipes where the moisture is pulled out of the house in an effort to cool it. Simply dig a hole large enough to accommodate a three to five gallon bucket (or you may be needing to empty it more often) near where these pipe drain out and use that as a water collection area. If that is too much for you, not to worry, a similar thing can be done if you have a dehumidifier for your home - simply take that water and instead of dumping it out, pour it in some empty gallon milk jugs and use those to water both house plants as well as plants outside.

Lastly, we have a rain barrel. Our local river conservation society allows you to purchase one ( I got mine as a Mother's Day gift two years ago) and that is another way to collect "free" water. Mine holds a significant amount of water and the spigot allows for a hose connection (though you must have a lot of water to get the pressure needed, so I just fill a watering can and go from there) Here is a link to our local river conservation society - This is current information, however they only take cash or checks for this particular thing because in a sense the garden shops are like a third party vendor for the conservation society. http://www.rivannariver.org/rcsstore.html

TIPS Tuesday How to get the family in on the GAME

OH No, the Paper is here and it is time to clip the coupons...

How do I find the time to get my coupons clipped and organized? Well, I rally my family everyone can do something.

Mat my, amazing husband, or myself often cut the coupons. Matthew who is four and a half sorts the coupons by food groups. We then place the coupons in their sections (since I have binder I can hand each person certain labeled sheets.) It didn't take long for my husband to get on board with the cutting coupon thing. He likes to save money and sit in "his" chair. (We take turns picking shows or get a family movie at the library to watch) It is actually relaxing while zoning out in front of the TV.

MAKE IT EDUCATIONAL

It is an easy way to spend family time together. We have a super time asking our son what does that coupon start with? What kind of food group does it belong to? Is it healthy or a treat? He has even noticed the numbers so we have talked about how each month and day has a number. We predict which coupon will expire first. We talk about how much the coupons are worth.

If your child or children are older, they can find the expired coupons for you. They can sort the coupons by value if you have a $.50 coupon for the item and a $.75 they can put the higher value coupon on the top.

The older children can also help you pull coupons for your shopping trip and put them in their holders. It is important that saving money becomes a family event.

When my son is older, I intend to pay him a percentage of the total I saved on my grocery bill to encourage him to save. It will also discourage him from asking for too many random things at the store. Just think of all the consumer math they could learn: percentages, the values doubled or tripled, cost, actual price paid, budgeting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions.. etc

Like I said, it is about spending less on food so you can spend your money on something else...

Here is what I scored today!! I bought 13 baby products to get the rebate.

If they do not have thirteen then you can use the other products in the list or ask for rainchecks.( a raincheck is a request for the item you want at the advertised price which yu can buy when it is in the store. On this deal you will have the whole month of may to collect all 13 products. You can not submit for therebate until you have the correct amount. There are lower amounts that you would need to buy but the rebate is also lower. This is the free deal)

Did you print out a Mail in Rebate form on Earth Day for the Recycled Reynolds Wrap Foil? If so, make sure you purchase your foil by today! I purchased mine this week at Harris Teeter during triple coupons. I used the .55¢ coupon making the foil .74¢. I will now send in for the rebate and actually make a little money!

We have many new readers and I want to make sure that all of you have had a chance to learn how to make money!

First, you may want to review what a “money maker” means HERE. Some of the best places to get money maker products are at CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Target. All of these stores have store coupons that you can combine with manufactures coupons. The drug stores also have rewards programs.

If you missed the post about Mail in Rebates (MIR) go HERE. MIR’s are a great way to try new products for FREE! Sometimes you can even turn a MIR into a moneymaker, such as my Reynolds foil. Things to remember about MIR’s:

· Always collect all of the data necessary; UPC code, receipt, form, etc.
· Only purchase MIR items if you have the money upfront to cover the out of pocket expense. MIR’s can take 6-8 weeks or even longer to come.
· Get organized with a filing system. Have a folder for MIR forms that you will possibly use, one for MIR’s submitted and a folder for receipts in case you come across a MIR at a later date.

The Cargivers Market Place is another way to earn money back on your baby care or adult care items. You can earn .75¢ back on each Jumbo package of Huggies you buy. Plus there are many more items earning cash back. Find out more HERE.

Target Store Coupons

Did you know that Target has store coupons? You can print Target web coupons HERE. I have also find Target coupons in the Sunday paper occasionally, in magazines and in my snail mailbox.

Why are Target coupons so beneficial? Well, remember that you can stack store coupon with a manufactures coupon. A store coupon and a manufacture coupon allows you to use TWO coupons on one item. Stacking coupons can make for some great deals! If an item will generate possible overage, give a manufactures coupon first and then the store coupon. Watch the video and I will give you some examples!

Sunday Shopping Trip

I shopped at three stores today, Walgreens, CVS and Harris Teeter. It was a good thing that Amee drove her SUV! Between Amee, Gina (Fun, Frugal and Fabulous) and me, we filled the SUV to the brim! We had so much fun doing it too!

Walgreens:
· I spent $19.38 out of pocket.
· Got back $14 in Register Rewards for next week.
· SAVED: $46.64 between sales and coupons!

CVS:
· Spent $19.04 out of pocket.
· Got back $28.99 in Extra Care Bucks
· SAVED: $53.04

Harris Teeter:
· Transaction #1: Spent $6.11 out of Pocket.
· Transaction #1: SAVED $68.18 between coupons and VIC card
· Transaction #2: Spent $9.16 out of pocket
· Transaction #2: SAVED $17.56 between coupons and VIC card. Most items in the this transaction were non-coupon items, but things I needed like bread, cheese and sour cream.

So there you go, $53.69 can get you A LOT of products if you hit the right sales and “play” the game!

Total SAVED Today: $185.42! That is a savings of 77.6% And that doesn’t count the Register Rewards and Extra Care Bucks I have to roll for next week!

We may have seen some of you on our super shopping trip. We decided to all shop together we filled my SUV to the brim with goodies. The total between the three of us was less than $100.00 at Harris Teeters. I spent the most at $45.00 but I got a chicken, a turkey, and a huge thing of baby formula...

TIP- Take a friend or two to triple your coupons and triple your fun! We were trading coupons in the aisles and finding all of the deals!!

Community Service Project

Every month, Madame Deals will have some sort of community service project. This month we have chosen to collect expired coupons. Why expired coupons?

It turns out that overseas military families can use expired coupons! Why should those coupons go in the trash when we can send them to people who could really use them? The overseas commissaries will allow military families to use expired manufactures coupons for six months past the printed expiration date. Only manufactures coupons can be accepted. No internet printable coupons can be sent.

Tips for making this a great project:

Cut coupons out. This will make it easier for them and less weight for shipping fees!
Sort coupons into two categories; food items and non-food items.
Place categorized coupons into Ziploc bags labeled with Food or Non-food.
Send only coupons that are expired by two months. It takes time for the coupons to get to where they are going!

We have decided to adopt a base through http://www.ocpnet.org/ . We looked over the list of bases in need and decided to adopt U.S. Navy Sigonella, Sicily!

My suggestions for what to buy: FREE items of course! Then I go for what my family NEEDS. In my case, I always stock up on diapers. Huggies will be $7.99 and Pull-Ups will be $6.99 after coupons. Also cleaning products are usually a good deal; if not FREE they are usually really cheap.

As I stated in the earlier post, I am a little jealous as my Kmart is not participating. After opening my mail today, I am even more jealous! Back in March Glamour Magazine ran a promotion for a FREE $25 Kmart gift card if you sent in your $50 of receipts from Kmart. Well can you guess? MY $25 Kmart Gift Card came today! I will save it for the next time my Kmart has Super Doubles~!

Kmart is having SUPER DOUBLES Up to $2.00!

This deal is for our friends and family in other states since our Virginia Kmarts are not participating. I am a little jealous although I already have my hands and cupboards full with Harris Teeter Triples!

I have checked the online circulars and the Central Coast of California stores are participating and some stores in Florida. Check your circular HERE.

Kmart has had a HUGE misprint in their circular coming out Sunday. It states double coupons up to .75¢. I heard a rumor that this was a misprint and so e-mailed corporate. Here is What they sent me:

Never participated in Kmart Super Doubles before? Well here is the scoop:

Try not to use a coupon that is for an amount off of two products; like -$1/2 products. Kmart will only double the amount of the purchase price of the first item.

Kmart doesn't give overage. This means no moneymaking deals!

Watch the register when the cashier scans the coupons. Kmart has been known to mess up on double days.

Go early. Most of the FREE items will go fast. Or find out when your store restocks later in the week and go.

Want even more savings? Sign up for e-mails HERE and you will get two $5 off of a $50 purchase coupons, one for in store and one online. Give the $5 off coupon BEFORE any other coupon is scanned.

Some stores will accept Internet printable coupons, check with your store!

This week in fashion for $20.00 or less I set out to find jean shorts that fit, are flattering, have a detail, can be worn dressed up or down, and most importantly were under $20.00. I always shop in JCREW for my T-shirts which are on sale for $15.00 this week. Their T-shirts are the best! They wash well and fit well. Their clothes are fun, classic with a twist, and usually expensive. They do, however, have an amazing sales rack. I found my shorts for $19.99. I have to say I did buy two other things this week because I saved $70 on my grocery order. I bought a yellow tank top from JCREW for $1.99 and a pair of sun glasses at the dollar tree. I need a pair to bring to the pool and leave in the pool bag.

The tip I have for you this week is look, look, look, and look everywhere never discredit a store. They ALL have sales. I have gotten some amazing deals from the high end department stores. You just have to be patient and diligent.

I picked these shorts because of the length, fabric, fit, and style. I will show you how I will add them in my ever expanding wardrobe that I am building each week with just $20.00 or less and my $100.00 for my season splurge (still have $74.00 left I only bought the $26.00 yellow coat.)

Do you often wonder what I do with all this stuff I bought on sale?

Are you eating the same meal over and over again?

We are here to help you out!

Disclaimer- I am not a chef, in fact, for ten years my husband thought I didn't know how to cook. I figured why cook when he would??? Well times have changed and I am the one in the kitchen and buying the groceries. I would also like to note that I was in a cooking co-op for a couple of years and people liked my cooking. I will put together easy recipes using the sale items at two different grocery stores each week. Please, feel free to give ideas as well.

Harris Teeter cook up some London broil on the grill.

Top Round London Broil on sale buy one, get one free or just $2.65 LB

Buy One unless you stockpile.

Take the London broil and place it in a bag with a seal.
Add one bottle of French Dressing Buy one, get one free.

Buy 1 use the coupon from 3/29 for $1.50 off, Makes it FREE!

Leave it to marinate one hour

Place the steak in a dish and then pierce it with a fork. Grill over hot coals. Then you will need to cut it diagonally in very thin strips. Serve hot.

Serve with La Brea Baguette one sale for $1.50

Tyson chicken drumsticks and thighs $1.99lb which is approx 60% off

Wash chicken, pat dry, place on a cooking sheet

Then apply olive oil with a brush
Next, apply spices of your choice 2 tsp of salt and ½ tsp of pepper is super.
Add some garlic, rosemary or paprika for even more flavor.
Place in the oven at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes check you meat thermometer to make sure it is cooked.

Serve Asparagus at just $1.99 a pound. Steam it up on the stove and add a little pepper or salt to taste. It usually takes about 8-10. The stems will turn a bright green color. Then just toss with salt, pepper, butter, or lemon.

Please keep your house safe by following the tips provided by Helpful Heather:

Disinfect your kitchen sponge by throwing them in the microwave (wet and add a squirt or two of soap) for about 2 minutes. The moisture from your sponge will put moisture in the air of your micro and then you take a clean paper towel or rag and wipe down the inside of your microwave. This is good for getting stuck on splatters off. You clean both your sponge and your microwave at the same time without harmful chemicals.

A really inexpensive cleaning tool is good ol' vinegar. It is a great disinfectant as well as cuts through grease and grime. Use it when mopping linoleum floors about 1/4 -1/2 cup to hot water and mop away. The smell (which is a concern for many) will dissapate over time and your floors will be cleaned.

I save even more money by using a salad dressing/oil cruet for my dish detergent. I keep it on the back of my sink and this allows me to have dish soap handy, but also to not use as much as I would if I squirt it from the bottle onto my sponge.

How it works:

Sign up for an account at The Caregivers Marketplace. You will receive a savings number and you can download the form. Save your original cash register receipts. When you have purchased 5 or more eligible products, you can fill out the rebate form and send it in with your original receipts.

Currently, the offer is .75 cents back on Huggies, GoodNights and Pull-Ups. Balmex offers $1.00 back. There is a whole list of adult pain relief products, vitamins, incontinence care, denture products and bathing in skin care as well. So, if you are taking care of an elderly adult, you could submit for cash back on those items as well!

I have made a file folder for caregivers Marketplace receipts. I place all of my receipts, with the item circled, into the folder until I am ready to send in for my rebate. I went grocery shopping for the first time in 11 days. I usually shop every week. However, life has been very busy lately and there was not enough time in the day to get to the store. That is the benefit of STOCKPILING! I allow myself a budget of $100 a week for ALL of my shopping (groceries, baby items, household). I encourage you all to come up with your own budget. Theoretically I could have spent $200 today since I had not been shopping lately. Would you believe I only spent $91.29 at Kroger and Harris Teeter combined! And I saved $113.94!

Here are the items I think you should stock-up on this week from Harris Teeter and Kroger. Note: I am not going to list out my whole shopping trip or all of the deals at these two stores. There are plenty of blogs that do a great job in grocery store lists, such as Frugal in Virginia .

MAKING DOUGH for A little DOUGH

This is a household favorite. We believe it is important to play. The way a child learns depends on how we as parents instruct them. I find that allowing my child to build things inspires him to be more creative in his ventures. These risks that he takes, while looking at me for approval, are met with verbal and non verbal praise. These praises should be task specific and generously offered. After all, they are free. On this Earth Day be reminded that each child is a gift. Enjoy your day and make a little dough with your little one.

Earth Friendly Play Dough

1 cup flour (not self-rising)

1/2 cup salt

1 cup water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1-1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Mix in saucepan over low heat. (It does not have to heat long.) Dough is ready when it rolls into a ball. Keep dough fresh in an airtight container. If you need to make different colors, add food coloring while mixing over heat.

Harris Teeter: Register your VIC card HERE to join e-VIC for special promotions. You will get an e-mail with the weekly e-VIC promotions. The best part: buy the promotional product and the discount comes off your total automatically when your VIC card is used!

Food Lion: Printable store coupons are found HERE Thanks Southern Savers! There are great baby care coupons. Use the $1.50 off Food Lion wipes coupon on the travel size wipes for FREE or very cheap wipes! You can also stack the store coupons with manufactures coupons!

CVS: Register your CVS card online HERE and sign up for e-mails. CVS sends coupons to your inbox every so often. These are usually money off a certain amount coupons; like $4 off of a $20 purchase.

Rite Aid: Transfer a prescription to Rite Aid and get a $25 gift card HERE . You can transfer two prescriptions for a total of $50! Use those gift cards on single check rebate items and you won’t have to pay anything out of pocket!

Kroger: Did you know that you can load coupons onto your Kroger plus card? This can be done through Shortcuts and Cellfire . Note: For Cellfire you don’t have to load the coupons onto your cell phone. I have mine loaded onto my plus card. The best part, you can still use a paper coupon too!

If your favorite store is not listed above, check out their website anyways. Chances are that you can register your store card or sign up for e-mails. Most likely, the store will send out promotions or coupons at some point. Some of the above stores also send out coupons via snail mail too!

What is a Money Maker?

It’s Money Making Monday!

Every now and then you will see us post about a money maker. How exactly can you MAKE money when “buying” products at a store? Let me tell you how! The easiest places to purchase a MONEY MAKER product would be at a drugstore like CVS or Walgreens. You see, these drugstores offer rewards programs. CVS uses Extra Care Bucks (ECB’s) and Walgreens uses Register Rewards (RR’s). The ECB’s and RR’s are used like store money. Almost every week CVS will offer a product as FREE after ECB’s. This means you purchase the product at the sale price and then receive ECB’s good on your next purchase. To turn those FREE items into MONEY MAKERS you just need to add in a coupon!

Let’s clarify with an example. The Bayer Crystals are on sale for $2.00 at CVS this week and you get $2.00 in ECB’s. Free right? But, the display had a $1.00 manufactures tearpad coupon on it. So, the Bayer rang up at $2.00, -$1.00 coupon. Paid $1.00 and got back $2.00 in ECB’s. There you have it, $1.00 MONEY MAKER and a FREE product!

Sometimes the best MONEY MAKERS are on products you and your family don’t actually use. In this case, I would purchase the item to make the money and then donate the item.

You can also make money off of rebates. We talked about that last week. If you missed that post go HERE . I plan to turn the Soft Soap Ensembles I purchased at CVS into a MONEY MAKER as I have a MIR for $4.00. Look in stores for the MIR form.

Some stores allow for overage. What that means is that the product is priced for less than what the coupon amount is for. A good example here is my Target trip last week. If you missed it go HERE . I had $1 off coupons for the Market fruit snacks. The small bag of fruit snacks rang up at .88¢. Therefore I had .12¢ in OVERAGE! Not a big MONEY MAKER but, I'll take it!

Looking like a MILLION for $20.00 Bucks

Ladies and gentlemen there is an answer to all your body issues. The answer is a great pair of jeans. We wear them all the time but are they wearing us? Do they sag where they shouldn't? Do they produce rolls that shouldn't be there?

When you put on your jeans they should accentuate your body. They should make you look your best.

The problem is a good pair of jeans is usually well over $50.00 usually about $150.00. I recommend that you go to Plato's closet . This store is geared towards the 20 something shopper however, their selection of jeans is huge. These preowned jeans are selected based on their quality and their current styles. The secret to amazing jeans is trying on as many pairs as it takes to get one that makes you feel like a million bucks. DO NOT look at the size. LOOK for fit!! It doesn't matter what size you are. It is better to wear a pair of jeans that fits then to squeeze yourself into a pair of jeans becuase you want the tag to say a certain number. (really, who is reading the number anyway?)

The pair I selected is AG Jeans. They retail for $172.00 new. They are a dark wash which helps to hide your imperfections. It also make it easier to dress them up or down depending on your plans.

OH Yeah.. How much did I pay? $15.00 for a savings of $157.00

I will post the new purchases for this week in green. I will also tell you how to make outfits using last weeks finds because it isn't a bargain unless you can wear the item in several ways.

Outfit #2

I paired the AG jeans ($15.00) with the blue shirt by GO International ($3.50) from my previous post ($3.50) and the Michael Kors shoes ($2.50) and the Jacket is a new addition since I did have $20.00 to spend.

I bought this Mossimo Jacket at Goodwill for $3.50 (savings of about $35.00). This is a brand that Target carries at a very reasonable price. This jacket will take any outfit from average to outstanding.

What is a COUPON?

Beginner Coupon Users: Well, the first thing you need to know when you start using coupons is what exactly they are! There are actually different types of coupons. The most common type of coupon is a manufactures coupon. These coupons are put out by companies in order to promote their product. You can find manufactures coupons in the Sunday paper, in the grocery store, in magazines and printable ones online. You can use a manufactures coupon at ANY store that accepts coupons.

Stores also sometimes put out their own coupon. A few stores that regularly have their own coupons are Target, CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid and Food Lion. Store coupons can be found online, in the snail mail, in the store and in the circulars.

A coupon will always have some sort of barcode on it. Most likely, they will also have an expiration date. It is illegal to copy a coupon. You can only use one manufactures coupon per item you are purchasing. When a coupon is for a free item, usually the maximum value will be listed somewhere in fine print. These are the basic facts about a coupon!

Intermediate Coupon Users: Did you know that you can stack coupons? No I don't mean in a pile! Coupon stacking is combining a manufactures coupon with a store coupon. I do this quite frequently at CVS. Here is an example: Buy 2 bottles of Pantene Shampoo which are on sale for 2/$7. I then used a CVS coupon (which printed out when I scanned my card at the red box) $3 off any two hair products. Then I gave the manufactures coupon for $3 off of two products. Total after coupons: $1. BUT, this deal is even nicer since $2 in Extra Care Buck's (ECB's) printed out! ECB's are like CVS money good on your next purchase. So, after all of that I got two free shampoos and actually made $1 in ECB's!

Remember, when you stack coupons, always give the store coupon before the manufactures coupon. This is especially true when you are using money off coupons.

Advanced Coupon Users: Okay experts, did you know there is a way to tell if a manufactures coupon will double even if it says "Do Not Double"? The very first number on the barcode to the left is the key. If the barcode starts with a 5, it should double no problem automatically when scanned. If the barcode starts with a 9, you are out of luck! Many blinkie (coupons found in machines at stores) start with the number 9. Do you see the 9 above (the very first one)? This coupon will not automatically double.

Now I have to say, it does depend on the cashier. Most of the time cashiers scan without reading the coupon. All they are focused on is if the coupon scans without beeping. However, I have had one cashier (yes, only one in my long time of coupon using!) pull out all of the "Do Not Doubles" so they would not automatically double. I just want to warn you that this could happen, but it is unlikely.

REMEMBER, every store has their own coupon policy. Be aware of the current coupon policy at each store. They do change their policies and it is always handy to carry around a copy of the corporate policy.
